A mysterious hacker has begun teasing the first untethered jailbreak for the latest devices running iOS 6, including the iPhone 5, the iPad mini, and the fourth-generation iPad. The hack will not come from the usual suspects — the iPhone-Dev Team — but rather from an individual calling himself “Dream JB.” He promises it will arrive on December 22, but are we getting our hopes up over nothing?
A jailbreak for iOS 6 has been available for a long time, but it’s a tethered solution that means once you’ve used it, your iOS device has to be plugged into your Mac or PC every time you need to boot it up. Restart your iPhone on the train home from work, then, and it’ll be pretty much useless until you get home.
What’s more, that jailbreak isn’t compatible with Apple’s latest iOS devices, which means if you have an iPhone 5 or a fourth-generation iPad, you’re stuck using the firmware the way Apple intended it to be used.
That may not be the case come December 22, however. If Dream JB fulfills his promise, we’ll be jailbreaking our iOS 6 devices — untethered — before Santa comes down the chimney. For those of you who may be doubting that promise, Dream JB promises a video proving the hack is coming tomorrow:
"Proof will be posted both here and on my Twitter account on Wednesday. As far as the video that will be uploaded, it will be a single-take shot of the entire jailbreak process, including a restart and usage of the device to prove it is untethered. It will be uploaded as raw video straight from my camera to YouTube. So no edits in any form. Thank you all for your patience and support."
People doubt it still, since we haven’t heard of Dream JB before. And Comex and Chpwn also determine it as "fake"
iH8sn0w is quoted on Twitter as saying: "Never trust anyone who has never released anything credible in the past." He went further, urging those anxious for a jailbreak to proceed with the utmost caution. "Don’t get your hopes up," he continued, "But also don’t just download anything.. it seems like a very smart thing to do to distribute a new virus."
For those who are interested, this is what Dream JB has to say about himself:
"My identity will remain an obscurity. I am not affiliated with any known dev team. This project is individual and solely run by me alone. I am here to show the world that the source of an exploit or jailbreak can be from outside the norm."
We will keep you updated with Dream JB’s claims of a video arriving as soon as tomorrow, it’s pretty easy to fake these things, so we’ll have to wait and see what comes of it all.
