MuscleNerd, an actual developer in the iOS jailbreak scene (a founding member of the iPhone Dev-Team group and the maintainer behind RedSn0w, PwnageTool, and UltraSn0w) was seen duking it out with two groups of iOS 6 jailbreak hoaxes and scams over the past two days. John Herthop released a fake video, passing off a simulation in Xcode as an iOS 6 jailbreak–Herthop has since admitted to the hoax on Twitter, and pledged to return all the money donated to him. Meanwhile a group of so-called developers calling themselves “team b1ackW!d0w” (a group made up of Defiant6, Jasonblundell, and formerly DanaloX) have posted clearly doctored photos of what they claim was a jailbroken iPod running iOS 6.MuscleNerd, an actual developer in the iOS jailbreak scene (a founding member of the iPhone Dev-Team group and the maintainer behind RedSn0w, PwnageTool, and UltraSn0w) was seen duking it out with two groups of iOS 6 jailbreak hoaxes and scams over the past two days. A video of John Herthop admitted iOS 6 jailbreak hoax.

Defiant6 has not admitted that team b1ackW!d0w’s infamous screenshot was a hoax, despite calls from his former teammate, DanaloX, to fess up. Instead, Defiant6 has taken to insulting MuscleNerd, the respected community developers who called them out on their BS–meanwhile they claim they’re still working on the jailbeak.

Team b1ackW!d0w’s “welcome to the future” screenshot is just about the sketchiest thing I’ve seen while covering jailbreaks. The screenshot is supposedly from DeFiant’s jailbroken iPod. There’s a stray “0″ floating to the left of photos, and the version heading has the word “Custom” written in a different font beside 6.0, which could only have been edited in. (I have never seen a jailbreak that tells me my firmware is “custom”.) Obviously the image has been manipulated, poorly at that. I can’t tell you why Defiant6 still claims his screenshot is real, but I’d be surprised if anyone continues to believe him.

For optimistic modders out there, I wouldn’t expect anything to ever materialize from that ‘team’: Aspiring hackers who are capable of delivering the goods do not need to fake their accomplishments.
