When iOS 5.1 was launched, one of the cool new features was the ability to grab the camera icon and slide upward to launch the Camera application instead of having to double-press the home button and then tap on the camera button. This new launching Style feels almost Zephyr-like and a lot of people liked it.
Unfortunately, iOS 5.1 is not jailbreakable on newer devices and any A4 or older devices excluding the old bootrom iPhone 3GS still have only a tethered jailbreak. That being said, if you wanted this new camera-launching feature on your iDevice, you were out of luck. A new free jailbreak tweak dubbed Camera Grabber for iOS 5 by iOS developer Ori Kadosh brings the iOS 5.1 camera grabber on the lock screen to iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.0.1 so everyone can enjoy the camera-launching fun.
Looking at the camera grabber from this tweak and comparing it to the iOS 5.1 counterpart, it is extremely hard to discern the difference. There is a noticeable difference in the size of the slide to unlock text in the unlock slider, and the Apple version of the camera grabber has slightly different shading. Besides these minor differences, most people without a comparison would not be able to tell the difference.
Launching the Camera application via Ori’s custom camera grabber is as smooth as butter and is more convenient than having to press the home button twice and then tap the camera button. If you have wanted this feature on your iDevice, but didn’t want to lose your iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak, then this tweak is for you. It does not work on the iPad. It’s free, so give it a shot!
