True Skate developer True Axis continues to make good on the promise they made back in December of four new skateparks coming to their awesome skateboard simulation game. The first new park, the Schoolyard, hit back in February, and offered a more street-style environment to skate around in. Then just last month the second new park called The Warehouse was released, and it offered a more skatepark-style level with plenty of space and different objects to hit. This week, the third park will be arriving.

I talked fairly recently about my unexpected obsession with Injustice: Gods Among Us on mobile, and the game has proven incredibly popular ever since its launch just over a year ago. NetherRealm Studios has been wonderful about updating Injustice with new features and characters, but ever since its release fans have been clamoring for one major new feature: multiplayer.

This story just popped up on our radar, and it's pretty rad to see Blizzard trying to shift Hearthstone [Free (HD)] from a game you play in your basement wearing your pajamas to a game that you go somewhere to play with other people. (Optionally still wearing your pajamas, if Magic events are any indication.) Blizzard is calling them a "Fireside Gathering" and the first big one will be held next Saturday, April 26th. They've got a directory of venues up on their site, which is a little limited right now, but considering they only just announced this, I expect there will be many more in short order.

It's hard to believe that EA's The Simpsons: Tapped Out [Free] has been on the App Store for more than two years, but as of this past March 1st, that is indeed the case. During that time the game has consistently been in the top charts, especially the top grossing chart. While there isn't a whole lot of "game" to The Simpsons: Tapped Out, it's undoubtedly dripping with excellent Simpsons fan service, which is a large part as to why it's done so well. EA has also been great about updating Tapped Out, adding new features and special events to the game that coincide with pretty much every major holiday. This Sunday is Easter, and again Tapped Out has received a new update to celebrate the occasion.

It’s no secret that Nintendo's Animal Crossing has been highly successful in its handled form, and the 3DS version was even out of stock for quite some time in Japan. It's curious then that we haven't yet seen a game quite like that on iOS. Stolen Couch Games thought that was strange too and they decided to create their own take on it. Castaway Paradise is everything you’d expect from a game of that genre. It features houses you can customize, a village to rebuild and plenty of activities like fishing, farming and bug-hunting.

Ossian Studios' The Shadow Sun was in development for years before finally landing in the App Store last December, but it turned out to be worth the wait. We really enjoyed the game in our review, and it really is one of the more enjoyable Western-style RPGs on iOS. This week, The Shadow Sun received its second update since release. The first update, released in February, was mostly bug fixes, and this latest update contains some fixes as well. But it also includes a new dog companion which you can recruit to fight by your side and generally just keep you company. Yay a dog!

Alright so maybe the headline and announcement for Game of Thrones Ascent was a little too negative as I've actually spent some time with it I've started to really appreciate what developer Disruptor Beam did with the IP. The best way to sum it up is it's a kingdom management free to play game, dripping with themes and fan service from the books and TV show. Back in December, Games Workshop and developer Eutechnyx announced a new game in the Warhammer universe for Steam and mobile devices called Warhammer 40k: Storm of Vengeance. While that initial announcement came with very few details other than it would be a "lane strategy" game, in late February Eutechnyx released a teaser trailer for Storm of Vengeance along with a few extra bits of info, one of which was a planned release date of March 27th.

Game of GDC: 'Seabeard' by Hand Circus
christine Sun Mar 23 12:25:47 2014
We've been pretty dedicated with our various game of the weekchoices over the months since we've started the column, but we're doing something a little different this week since 98% of our attention went towards games we saw at GDC. So, here's the Game of GDC. Weirder yet, since most of the games we've seen are either works in progress or prototypes, we've decided what we're shooting for with this nomination is the game that seems the most promising to be really radical when it's finally released.

Substantial Games producer Pin Wang sent across this gameplay footage of the forthcoming tablet-only line-drawing RTS Ember Conflict this week. We first saw this Autumn Dynasty-inspired fantasy strategy game back in January.Wang told me that the game is still on track for a Fall 2014 release, and Substantial have just revealed that they’re planning on supporting certain Android tablets as well as iPads. But you know how that works: only Android tablets running Android 4.5 Lima Bean with Nvidia positronic chips that have been moistened by true tears of Sergei Brin will be compatible. I’ll keep you posted.

GDC 2014: Hands-on with Tiger Style's 'Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon'
christine Thu Mar 20 12:25:52 2014
With such hits as Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor and Waking Mars, Tiger Style are easily one of my favorite iOS developers. That's why it was such a big deal this past October when they revealed a new project through a cryptic teaser site that alluded to something called Blackbird Estate.

In August of last year, Vivid Games announced a new 3rd-person action adventure game based in Greek Mythology called Godfire: Rise of Prometheus. The screens they released looked great, and the following month Vivid teased us with a brief trailer, which only made us even more eager to get our hands on Godfire.

The arrival of the iPad has revolutionized many classic gaming pastimes. One example would be board games. While not a complete replacement for physically rolling dice and moving pieces across a board, it sure is convenient to be able to take many board games with you wherever you go, all stored neatly in digital form on your iPad. No pieces to worry about losing, no fuss and no muss.

christine Thu Mar 20 12:23:09 2014
Playdek revealed a couple of days ago that the first expansion to their well-recieved Dungeons & Dragons iOS board game Lords of Waterdeep is en route. The studio’s Facebook post says that this expansion is called Undermountain, and if things line up with the tabletop version of the game, it will add a new quest area to the game board and associated quests. The Undermountain module was half of the Scoundrels of Skullport expansion that was released on cardboard last year.

christine Tue Mar 18 12:06:58 2014
Another game we saw today at GDC was Leo's Fortune, a super slick looking physics-based platformer featuring a weird green puff named Leopold. You can inflate yourself to float, interact with puzzle elements in game, and more. Additionally, they've made sure that even though some of the platforming elements can be frustrating, you instantly respawn a few seconds back so you never need to replay entire levels:

GDC 2014: GameResort's 'Adventure Beaks', a Runner that Features Dressing Up Penguins
christine Tue Mar 18 12:05:09 2014
GameResort is responsible for some of my favorite iOS games, like Biplane and Downhill Bowling, and they're at GDC this week showing off their latest effort Adventure Beaks. It's a runner, which admittedly is a tough sell nowadays, but hear me out as this one is incredibly well done. The level designs are wonderful, and there's a whole bunch of them, as well as an extensive character customization system. Also, adorable penguins. We take a lengthy look at Adventure Beaks in the video below.

christine Tue Mar 18 12:02:42 2014
You may be familiar with Ensomniac Studios by their iOS game Glint [Free], which was just released to the App Store last week. The one-man studio is here at GDC showing off a new iOS gaming project, tentatively titled Quest. It's a side-scrolling runner heavily inspired by Temple Run, which is the first game that got Ensomniac's Ryan Martin interested in mobile gaming in the first place. Check out the hands-on demo.

We're not big into previewing many of these kind of timer-based multi-currency free to play games, but Here Be Monsters seems neat because it includes everything. You like crafting? They got it. Collecting, trapping monsters, fishing, tweaking out your homestead? They got it. They're billing it as a "light MMO" and while it might really not appeal to the gamer-y crowd of TA, it's neat to see how expansive these games are getting.

GDC has officially kicked off for us at TouchArcade, and one of the first games we've seen is Naiad Entertainment's Sneaky Sneaky. It's something of a dungeon crawler with stealth elements, as well as some light puzzle solving and enemy battles. Here's a video where Naiad explains the game by going through a few demo levels they built just for GDC.

Last week we told you that Halfbrick had soft-launched their latest creation Bears vs. Artin the Canadian and Australian App Stores, and today during GDC they've released the first official gameplay trailer for the game. If you haven't been able to check out the soft-launch version and are curious what the game's about, check out the trailer.

There were some other things I was planning on showing you this morning but I’ve bumped them all back since seeing this trailer for forthcoming point-and-click adventure The Frostrune. Put your headphones in and watch this, I promise it’ll be the spookiest thing you see this morning. Unless you work the day shift at an insane asylum.

christine Mon Mar 17 12:11:52 2014
When Clancy named Chroma Squad as one of Pocket Tactics‘ most anticipated games of 2014, he did so on the strength of the game’s memorably weird set-up (run your own Power Rangers-esque TV production company) and the promise of developer Behold Studios’ first game, Knights of Pen & Paper – because we hadn’t actually seen much gameplay footage of the game since it was revealed last summer.

Last year we first heard that Lucasarts designer Bill Tiller was getting stuck into a new adventure game, almost 20 years after he’d worked on point-and-click classics Full Throttle and Curse of Monkey Island. Judging from the trailer, Perils of Man certainly has that a touch of that Lucasarts aura about it.

Whoever bought the rights to Atari’s intellectual properties last year isn’t wasting any time in getting a return on that investment. If you go to RollerCoasterTycoon.com right now, you’ll see a landing page trumpeting the announcement that an iOS-exclusive RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 is coming soon.

Way back in the nebulous past of 2012 we heard that well-regarded browser-based CCG Card Hunter would be making its way to iPad & Android. The Flash version of Card Hunter, which combines deck-building and tactical combat with a delightful tabletop game-within-a-game art style, won over a lot of fans last year — including Adam Smith at Pocket Tactics spirit guide RPS.

Full Control’s Space Hulk for iOS got off to a pretty rocky start in 2013, but a lot of the bugs and annoyances that fouled the launch edition have been subsequently rooted out. With the game steadied to a degree that satisfies the Emperor, the Danish devs have turned to releasing more content.

If you're new to the world of iOS gaming (and by new, I mean "not around in early 2009ish") chances are you've never heard of Hand Circus. Well, they were responsible for what was easily among the very best of the early iOS games, Rolando.

I normally reserve my haughtiest, most majestic scoff for gameplay-free trailers but shall we agree to make an exception for This War of Mine? It’s a game that takes place in a war zone but flips the script by casting you as the leader of a band of civilians trying to survive amidst the chaos.

Is your spider-sense tingling? Well you should probably get that checked out, because you are not Spider-Man. But if you were Spider-Man, that tingling sensation would likely be due to the fact that there's a new The Amazing Spider-Man movie coming out this year, and Gameloft is working on a movie-tie in to launch right alongside it.

I Dig It: Journey to the Core is the next release from Enigmo: Exploremakers Team Chaos, which puts you in the cab of a Dig-Dug/Motherlode-style mining game with a unique twist: fluid dynamics. When you come across pockets of uncrossable lava in the procedurally-generated 2D world, you can drain it out of your path, or divert water into it to cool the lava into rock. Very clever.

Dedicated PTers will recall that I was rather delighted with the preview build of First Strike, a nuclear war RTS from Swiss devs Feinheit/Blindflug. The game is now available worldwide for iPad and it gets a firm handshake and pat on the back from me. Remember, I’m aged and slow and usually hand RTS games off to younger hands like Clancy — but First Strike was the perfect pace for me.

It's called Bears vs. Art, and it's a free puzzler where you roll your bear around through a series of calculated moves to wreak havoc in art galleries. Check out the teaser trailer:

Space Noir? But space is already noir. Maybe “space” is being used as an adjective here. Like the way car companies name colours. Champagne gold. Caribou beige. Get your 2015 Citroën DS in Space noir.

Talking with Republique producer and Camoflaj founder Ryan Payton was one of my favorite interviews of last last year. I mean that on every level: it was a fascinating, fast-moving conversation with a smart, creative developer. I was crushed when it turned out that I didn’t like his game very much.

Back at the beginning of February we caught our first glimpse of First Strike, a real-time strategy game about nuclear was that was equal parts beautiful and gut-wrenching. Swiss developers Feinheit (now working as Blindflug Studios) got in touch today to say that the game is done and releasing next Wednesday night for iOS and Android.

If you won’t take my word for it that a game about mass-transit system design can be a tense, white-knuckle thriller, go play the free in-browser beta of Mini Metro yourself. You’re the administrator of the city’s subway, and stations (and passengers) are popping up all the time. The city, in its bureaucratic wisdom, allocates you just one upgrade per week: a new line, additional cars for existing lines, under-river tunnels and the like.

The iOS platform has grown at such an incredible pace during its short lifetime, and mobile hardware has advanced to a point where it rivals dedicated gaming consoles. It's remarkable. But it also means it's becoming harder and harder to really bowl people over with fancy visuals.

christine Tue Mar 04 11:16:51 2014
Last week I heard from Glitchsoft, the makers of that perfectly-styled He-Man mobile game from 2012. The Canadian devs wanted to announce that they were putting the finishing touches on Uncanny X-Men: Days of Future Past for iOS and Android and that it would be available in May. Which very conveniently will land it right alongside the rush of promotion for Marvel’s Tyrion Lannister-starring X-Men film of the same name.

I know that we tend to regard touchscreen action games with the squinty suspicion that greets SyFy Channel original films and Ma Faraday’s Sunday roasts but I’ve had my eye on Crescent Moon’s Mines of Mars for quite a while now. This game combines the 2D mining ofMotherlode with a bit of Metroid-style action and it looks absolutely beautiful.

Owen asked me to have a look at how The Inner World is holding up since the adventure game received a much-needed patch the other day. A good three months after its release, and nearly two since Iweighed in on the bug-ridden iOS port of Studio Fizbin’s acclaimed PC adventure game, and I can now safely say that I’ve completed The Inner World, and that the game seems to be in a state where, well, it’s actually possible to finish it at all. “Most likely” possible, that is.

I’m not going to attempt to out-funny this trailer for The Reaper, because that’s a sucker’s game. But you should definitely watch this trailer for the forthcoming puzzler from Danish devs Kong Orange. It takes a page from Final Destination and has you setting up elaborate Rube Goldberg scenarios to help Death bag the souls he’s after. Death is also quite an enthusiastic dancer, it would appear.

When is Shadowrun: Dragonfall coming for iPad & Android?

I do know that the keenly-anticipated expansion to last year’s RPG of the Year runner-up is out right now for desktops on Steam. I’ve asked Harebrained Schemes if they had a target date for when the mobile version of Dragonfall would be released and they replied with their usual circumspection that they did not.
